Channelopathies in brief
Ion channels are enabling the passage of ions (sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, and others) across the membrane of virtually every cell. Sometimes, these ion channels are not working properly because their structure is altered by genetic mutations or because drugs or toxins are modifying their properties. Diseases caused by these dysfunctional ion channels are called channelopathies.
